In the previous posts, I had been narrating my travel story. Here is a summarized details, which can help you plan travel to Mathura-Vrindavan-Nandgaon-Gokul-Barsana. This Mathura-Vrindavan-Nandgaon-Gokul-Brijbhumi travel itinerary is based on my multiple visits to Brijbhumi.

How can I reach Vrindavan by train?

Nearest Railway Station: Mathura Junction.

Mathura Junction is connected to New Delhi and other important stations of North India by direct trains.

How can I reach Mathura from Kolkata?

The best train to book your travel from Kolkata to Mathura is Kolkata AGC Express (Kolkata Agra Cantt Express) (12319). This train travel once in a week, only on Wednesday 1 PM from Kolkata station.

Mathura to Vrindavan by Rail Bus: There is a meter gauge line between Mathura and Vrindavan where there was a rail bus service. The service was suspended due to technical issues and COVID but was resumed in Nov 2021. This year, on Janmasthami, Ministry of Railways announced a 50 seater rail bus service will run between Mathura and Vrindavan and it is expected to start from 30th September 2022. It will take 35 minutes to travel between the two cities halting at 2 stations.

Mathura to Vrindavan by road: 14.5 KM (Takes around 30 mins by auto)

Vrindavan can be easily reached from Lucknow and Jaipur by road.

How can I travel to Vrindavan from New Delhi by road?

Vrindavan is well connected with New Delhi by excellent Yamuna expressway and it takes less than 3 hours to reach Vrindavan from New Delhi by car.

Where to stay at Vrindavan?

Accommodation: Whenever we plan to visit a new place, we start enquiring about the decent places to stay within budget. Mathura, being a prominent city and the administrative headquarter of Mathura district of UP, there are a number of good hotels as well as budget hotels. However, I have always stayed at Vrindavan. Starting from dharmshala to very luxurious hotel, there are many places to stay in Vrindavan.

The following are some places which you can book for your stay here in Vrindavan. These places are close to ISKCON and Prem Mandir

There are many more good hotels but I have stayed in the first two in the list above and both are really good. Kridha is nearer to Prem Mandir and Anand Krishna Van is close to ISKCON temple.

Best season to visit Brijbhumi

The region is quite hot during summer and very cold in winter. So the best season is from November to March when you can roam comfortably. However devotees visit round the year. Proximity to Delhi and NCR has increased the weekend traffic.

Popular festivals of Vraj

The towns and villages are very crowded during Holi and Janmasthami. Large number of devotees gather here. Also the lathmar holi celebrated particularly in Barsana is of special attraction. On this day, the boys and men from Nandgaon goes to Barsana to celebrate Holi. Within Vrindavan, holi is celebrated with petals of flowers in Prem Mandir.

How can I plan trip to Vrindavan and adjoining villages?

If you are planning or willing to visit Mathura Vrindavan and adjoining villages then you might be wondering, how many days you need to plan. I am trying to share Mathura Vrindavan travel itinerary based on my multiple visits in different seasons.

Day 1:

On first day, you can take a car and visit Shri Krishna Janambhumi in Mathura.

Shri Krishna Janambhumi timing
  • Summer : 5 AM to 12 Noon; 4 PM to 9-30 PM
  • Winter : 5-30 AM to 12 Noon; 3 PM to 8-30 PM

In Mathura, if time permits, you can visit Dwarkadhish temple as well.

From there, you can move to Gokul and Raval to visit number of temples as described before. These are small villages associated with the childhood stories of Shri Krishna and Radharani

The distance between Mathura and Gokul is 10 KM.

Places to visit at Gokul :
  • Raman Reti
  • Chourashi Khamba

Day 2:

Next day, you can make a plan to visit Nandgaon (48 KM from Vrindavan)

Places to visit at Nandgaon
  • Nand Bhavan
  • Vrinda Devi temple
  • Pawan Sarobar
  • Ter Kadamba

Then you can drive to Barsana.

Places to visit at Barsana
  • Laadli Laal temple

While returning to Vrindavan, you can drive through Govardhan. These three places are on the same route but it will take almost the whole day

Day 3:

Can be used for local Vrindavan tour.

Famous temples and places to visit at Vrindavan
  • ISKCON temple
  • Prem Mandir (quite close to ISKCON temple and best to visit in the evening to watch the colourful lights)
  • Nidhivan
  • Rangji Temple
  • Banke Bihari temple
  • Vaishno Devi temple

The above Mathura Vrindavan 3 day trip will cost you around 8000 INR to 9000 INR per person including food, lodging and local site seeing (based on 2023). However the cost may vary based on season as transport cost and hotel may vary. However if you stay in dharmshala or any budget hotel and use shared transport, then the cost will come down to 1500 INR to 200o INR per person.

ISKCON Vrindavan has a tourist center from where you can book car for site seeing. You can also take guide from them which is really helpful. I had availed the guide service twice.
